Awareness of the problem of time begins with the verification of a great inequality between genders in relation to the distribution of time and the decision-making capacity about its use.

As a precedent, patriarchy not only organizes roles: it also organizes rhythms, schedules, availability, burdens, and expectations. Defines which times have economic value and which do not. He defines who can devote time to himself, to his career, to rest, to leisure, to politics… and who cannot afford it because he silently sustains the well-being of others.

The data show that men do more hours of paid work, while women take on more domestic and care work, especially in families with children, for example, in Catalonia women devote much more time to domestic and family work and continue to assume most of these hours, although the difference has been slightly reduced over the years. The change in gender roles, with women increasingly participating in paid work alongside domestic and family duties, combined with territorial, economic, demographic, and social changes, has led to a rethink of current social time management, especially about achieving greater equality between women and men (Balbo, 1991).

Time, by extension, has become an essential dimension through which the relationship between people and work, and specifically between women and work, can made visible. This relationship is still controversial today.
